When we install sod in Calgary
We install sod across Calgary from roughly May to mid-October. New sod needs consistent water and moderate temperatures to root, so late spring and early fall are the best windows — early fall roots nearly as well as spring — and we avoid the peak of mid-summer heat and the first hard frosts. Do I need sod installation or sod replacement in Calgary?
Installation, if the ground is bare and already close to graded — a new build, an addition, or a yard that has never had grass. Sod replacement is the job when a lawn is already there and failing: the old turf is stripped and the grade re-cut before fresh sod goes down, which is why it costs more. How long does sod installation take?
A typical Calgary residential yard is one to three days on site once it's booked — longer if there's significant regrading or drainage work.
How soon can I walk on new sod? Mow it?
Stay off it for about two weeks while it roots. First mow at around three weeks, once it's anchored and you can't lift a corner. The new sod watering guide walks through the first three weeks.
Am I allowed to water this much under Calgary's watering restrictions?
Yes, under the regular schedule — new sod is exempt from Calgary's 3-day watering schedule for its first 21 days. If the City declares outdoor water restrictions, Stage 3 limits that watering and Stage 4 stops it — the stage table in the Calgary watering restrictions guide sets out what each stage allows. Do you guarantee the sod?
