Sod Replacement in Chestermere

We know how Chestermere's developments were built: fast, on deep fill, with a rough grade that was never finished. That's why so many yards here hold water within a couple of years. A sod replacement (or “sod redo”) fixes it at the source instead of laying new turf over the same problem. Installation workmanship — grading, seams, edging, drainage and hardscape — is warranted for one year from completion; sod and plant survival aren’t, because they depend on watering after we leave.

Westmere, Rainbow Falls, Kinniburgh and Dawson's Landing — most of it built in the last 15 years on engineered fill. The lot gets rough-graded, sod goes down within days, and the ground keeps settling.

On walkout lots and anything near the lake reserve the drainage margins are tight to begin with, so a small settlement is enough to pond water against the house. New sod on top doesn't touch the cause.

Do you replace sod on walkout lots?

Regularly, on Chestermere walkout lots — a walkout basement changes where water is allowed to go, and getting that wrong is how you end up with a wet lower level. We grade to keep water moving away from the walkout, not toward it.

Do Calgary's watering restrictions apply to my new sod here?

Not Calgary's year-round watering schedule — the City of Chestermere says that schedule isn't a restriction, so it doesn't apply in Chestermere. Chestermere does buy its treated water from Calgary, though, and has to adopt the same restriction stages whenever Calgary enacts them. Check the City of Chestermere's current outdoor water rules directly before you rely on any exemption. Will new sod fix a lawn full of quackgrass or creeping bellflower?

Only if the root layer leaves with the old turf. Both spread underground, so fragments left in the soil start again — which is why spraying and pulling stop holding once they're through the whole lawn. A replacement works because the turf and the roots under it go together. If the lawn is otherwise healthy and the weeds are patchy, you want a lawn-care company instead; we don't spray.

Can you lay sod where a tree was removed?

Yes, but not straight onto the backfill. A removal leaves grindings and loose material that keep settling, and sod laid over it sinks into a dish. The material comes out, screened topsoil goes back in compacted in lifts, and the area is graded flush before any sod goes down. If the stump is still in the ground, have it ground out first — we don't remove stumps — and we take it from there.
