Can I water new sod under Calgary's watering restrictions?

Calgary now runs a permanent, year-round outdoor watering schedule under the Water Utility Bylaw (40M2006), approved by City Council on April 29, 2026. New sod isn't held to it — but the exemption only covers what it actually says, so it's worth knowing exactly.

That's the schedule your established lawn follows once your new sod has rooted. Enforcement is education-first — the City's stated approach is warnings before fines while people learn the new schedule.

The new-sod exemption

Newly laid sod is exempt from the regular schedule for its first 21 days — you can water it on whatever days and times it actually needs, which in Calgary heat is often twice a day for the first week or two. New seed gets 45 days; new trees and shrubs get 5 years. All three are described on the City's own schedule page as “always allowed” during their establishment window, separate from the regular 3-day rotation.

The City's published guidance doesn't describe a registration or permit process for claiming the exemption — it isn't something you apply for. The practical version: water new sod on the schedule it needs, and keep your install invoice as your record of the date if a bylaw officer ever asks. That's the same advice we give every customer at handover.

What counts as "new"

The clock starts on your install date — the day the sod actually went down, which is also the date on your invoice. Twenty-one days from that date, your lawn moves onto the regular schedule for its address, whether or not it feels fully rooted yet. Most Calgary sod is well-rooted by then if it's been watered on the schedule we hand every customer.

Does this apply in Chestermere too?

No — Chestermere is on its own water utility, separate from Calgary's, and its restrictions can change with regional supply conditions rather than following a fixed year-round schedule. Check the City of Chestermere's current outdoor water restrictions directly before relying on any exemption there; we won't guess at rules that change with the water supply.

If the 21 days run out before you're confident it's rooted

Move to the regular schedule for your address and watch the lawn, not the calendar — a light watering outside the schedule during a genuine heat event is a bylaw question we can't answer for you, but a lawn that's visibly still stressed at day 21 is unusual if it was watered properly from day one. What happens if a bylaw officer asks about my watering?

Show the install date — your invoice works. The exemption is time-based (21 days from install), not something that needs pre-approval.

Does the exemption cover an entire yard, or just the new sod?

Just the newly sodded area. If you're topping up one section of an established lawn, only that section is exempt — the rest of the yard still follows the regular schedule.

Is the schedule the same for a sod replacement as a new install?

Yes — the exemption is based on when the sod was laid, not whether it's new construction or a full lawn replacement. Either way, the 21 days start on your invoice date.
