How to water new sod (Calgary)

This is the one thing you control that decides whether your new lawn takes. Follow it.

Week 1 — keep it wet

Water within 30 minutes of the last piece being laid, and soak it — you want water through the sod and 3–5 cm into the soil below.

Then water 2–3 times a day, enough that the sod never dries out and the soil under it stays damp. In Calgary heat or wind, that might mean early morning, midday and late afternoon. Lift a corner to check — the underside and the soil should be moist, not just the top.

Stay off it. No foot traffic, no pets, no mower.

Week 2 — start backing off

Drop to once or twice a day, but water longer each time so it soaks deeper. The sod should be knitting to the soil now — gently tug a corner; if it resists, it's rooting.

Week 3 — train the roots down

Every other day, a good long soak. Letting the surface dry slightly between waterings pushes the roots down to find moisture, which is what you want for a drought-tough lawn.

Week 4 onward — normal

Two to three deep waterings a week, about 2.5 cm total including rain. Early morning is best. First mow now, if the sod won't lift and the grass is 8–10 cm tall — sharp blade, take off no more than a third.

Signs you're getting it wrong

• Gaps opening at the seams — too dry, water more
• Spongy, squelching, mushrooms — too wet, back off
• Grey-blue tint, footprints staying visible — drought stress, water now
• Yellowing after 2+ weeks — usually overwatering, not underfeeding

FAQ

Can I use a sprinkler system?

Yes, if it covers evenly with no dry corners. Run it manually on the frequent early schedule — the normal program isn't enough water for new sod.

What if it rains?

Skip a watering if the soil under the sod is already wet. Don't skip if only the surface got damp.

How long until it's a 'real' lawn?

Rooted in ~2–3 weeks, fully established by the end of the first season.
