Sod Replacement in Calgary

Sod replacement is a construction job, not a lawn-care one. The old turf and a layer of tired soil come out, the grade gets re-cut so water leaves the property, and fresh #1 nursery sod goes down on a base that's ready for it. Done once and done right, the lawn is still good in ten years.

Workmanship — grade, level, seams and edges — warranted one year from completion. The turf itself is not warranted, because whether it takes comes down to watering after we leave.

Gate width

Our Bobcat MT100 needs about 3 ft (36 in) of clear width, so a standard side-yard gate is enough. Narrower than that and the tear-out moves by hand instead.

What we don’t do

No lawn care — no mowing, no weed spraying, no pest treatment — and no stump grinding or removal. This is landscape construction.

Most Local Lawns sod replacements in Calgary run $2,000–$6,000, with the average backyard landing between $3,500 and $6,000; a large yard, or a regrade plus a drain, runs $6,000–$12,000 — the range depends mainly on yard size, how much regrading is needed, and whether drainage work is added.

Signs your Calgary lawn needs replacing, not repairing

• Water pools or puddles by the deck, along the fence, or against the foundation after rain
• The lawn is lumpy and bumpy — scalped on the high spots, soggy in the low ones
• More than about 40% weeds, or thin, bare or dead patches that never fill back in
• The grade runs toward the house instead of away from it
• A builder-grade lawn that failed in its first year or two
• You've reseeded twice and it still looks the same
• Tree roots run along the surface and the mower scalps them every pass
• There's a dead circle where a tree came out, and it's still settling

The pattern: turf that fails everywhere at once, or keeps failing in the same place, is almost always a soil and grade problem rather than a grass problem. How a Local Lawns sod replacement works

1. Strip. The old sod and the top layer of poor soil come off — hauled away in our own dump trailer, not left in a pile on your driveway.
2. Regrade. We re-cut the slope with our Bobcat MT100 so it falls away from the house to the City of Calgary lot-grading standard — at least 4% within 1.2 m of the foundation, 2% across the lawn — and correct the low spots. This is the part that decides whether the new lawn lasts.
3. Drainage, if needed. Where the yard genuinely can't drain to daylight, we add a French drain or catch basin, quoted as its own line.
4. Rebuild the base. Screened topsoil — soil run through a screen so the rocks, roots and clumps are out — where the ground is thin or full of construction clay, raked and rolled dead level.
5. Sod. #1 nursery sod, laid the day it's delivered, staggered, seams tight, edges cut clean around beds and walks, then rolled and watered in.
6. Handover. Debris gone, site swept, and a watering schedule in your hand.

When to replace sod in Calgary

Why the grade is the whole game

Almost every failed lawn we're called to replace failed for the same reason: it was sodded fast over ground that was never graded to drain.

Calgary's newer communities are built on deep fill that keeps settling for a year or two after the sod goes down — low spots open up, the slope flattens or reverses, and the heavy clay underneath holds water instead of shedding it.

The sod we install in Calgary

We lay Kentucky Bluegrass blend sod for the vast majority of Calgary lawns — it's the standard for a reason: it's cold-hardy through prairie winters, self-repairs from foot traffic and minor damage, and holds a dense, dark-green colour through the season.

It's grown on nearby sod farms and cut fresh for the day it's laid, not held in a yard.

Mistakes that shorten a new lawn's life

Local Lawns gets called to fix a lot of sod jobs that failed within a year or two. It's almost always one of these:

• Sod laid on the old grade. If the slope was wrong before, it's still wrong under the new turf — you've just bought yourself another year before it shows again.
• No topsoil, or not enough. Sod rolled straight onto compacted construction clay or thin fill never roots properly, no matter how good the turf is.
• Watered on a sprinkler timer meant for an established lawn. New sod needs a different, more frequent schedule for the first three weeks — we hand every customer one.
• Downspouts still dumping next to the house. A perfect regrade can't win against a downspout adding water back at the foundation.

How much does it cost to replace a lawn in Calgary?

Most Calgary residential sod replacements run $2,000–$6,000, and larger yards or ones needing a drain run higher. The price is driven by square footage, how much the grade has to move, and whether topsoil is trucked in. You get a fixed written quote after we measure. Is a “sod redo” the same as sod replacement?

Yes — same job, different name. So is “lawn replacement.” Strip the old turf, fix the grade, lay fresh sod.

Where does the old sod go after tear-out?

The old turf and a layer of soil come out and go in our own dump trailer to the landfill — disposal is included in the quote. Nothing gets left behind on your Calgary property.

Can I hire you just to remove my old sod?

Yes — across Calgary and Chestermere, if the job meets our standalone minimum of around $2,000. Stripping the old turf and a layer of soil and hauling it to the landfill is the first step of every replacement, and Local Lawns will do it on its own when the job reaches that floor. Smaller removals are usually bundled with other work in the yard, and Harman decides case by case. Can you replace just part of my lawn?

Sometimes. If the problem is one low corner, we can cut that section, regrade it and re-sod the patch. On its own a patch like that still sits at our ~$2,000 minimum for standalone work, so it's usually bundled with something else in the yard. If the whole yard drains the wrong way, patching it wastes money; a full replacement is the honest fix. We'll tell you which after we walk your Calgary yard.

Can you turn a rock or gravel yard back into lawn?

Yes — Local Lawns turns rock and gravel yards back into sod. The rock or gravel and the weed barrier under it come out with our machine and leave in our trailer, then the ground is graded so water runs away from the house, rebuilt with screened topsoil and sodded — the same sequence as any sod replacement in Calgary or Chestermere. There's no set price for this one: you get a fixed written quote after the free on-site measure.

How long does sod replacement take?

A Local Lawns sod replacement takes two to four days on site for most Calgary yards once booked — longer if there's significant drainage work.

When can a Calgary sod replacement start, and what decides the date?

A deposit decides it, not a queue number. The sequence is the same on every job: we aim to call back within one business day, book the free on-site measure within a few days, and the fixed written price follows a day or two after that. A 25% deposit confirms your spot, and the start date is confirmed once it's received.

From there three things move the date, and none of them are ours to control. Season: sod goes down from May to mid-October, and early fall roots nearly as well as spring. Weather: landscape work is weather-dependent — heavy rain, frozen ground or unsafe conditions can push a start, and we reschedule promptly and keep you updated. The fall cutoff: sod stops going down by mid-October; grading and other dirt work continue until the ground freezes hard. Why doesn't new sod alone fix a drainage problem?

Because the water follows the grade underneath, not the grass. Laying fresh sod over a bad grade just hides the problem for a season. Do you guarantee the new sod?

Do you replace sod in Chestermere too?

Yes — sod replacement in Chestermere is a big part of what we do, and we're based there.

What kind of sod do you use?

Kentucky Bluegrass blend for almost every yard — the standard for Calgary's climate. Shade-tolerant and lower-water blends are available where the spot calls for it — and if a spot genuinely won't grow grass (deep shade, a hard-used dog run), we'll tell you before you pay for sod that would fail there.

Why sod instead of seed for a replacement?

Time and reliability. Seed on bare, freshly regraded dirt is slow to establish and washes or blows around before it roots; sod holds the new grade immediately and gives you a finished lawn the same week. The sod vs. seed comparison covers both in full.

Do I need to be home while you work?

No. Most of our Calgary customers aren't. We just need clear access to the yard and, ideally, a way to reach water for the first watering. Before we dig we call Utility Safety Partners (formerly Alberta One-Call) for public utilities; private lines — irrigation, lighting, invisible fence — are yours to mark or tell us about, which is the one thing worth doing before we arrive (see contract terms). Can you replace sod in a back yard with a narrow gate?

Usually yes. Our Bobcat MT100 needs about 3 ft (36 in) of clear width, and a standard side-yard gate is enough for it. Narrower than that, or a set of stairs in the way, and the tear-out and the soil move by hand instead — the same job and the same finished lawn, but more labour on both ends: carrying the old turf out and the new soil and sod in. That extra time is priced when Local Lawns measures your Calgary yard, not discovered on invoice day. What's included in a Local Lawns sod replacement quote?

Haul-away of the old sod and soil, screened topsoil (not just whatever was already there), edge cutting around beds and walks, a full site clean-up, and a written watering schedule — all in the one fixed price on every Local Lawns quote, not add-ons discovered on invoice day.

Can you match an existing lawn or just do one section?

Yes. We match the grade and soil level at the seam so a partial replacement doesn't leave a visible step or a stripe of different-aged sod. Tell us the boundary and we'll quote just that area.

Will new sod fix a lawn that's full of quackgrass or creeping bellflower?

Only if the roots come out with the old turf. Both spread underground rather than by seed alone, so any fragment left in the soil starts again — which is why mowing, pulling and repeated spraying tend not to hold once they're through the whole lawn. A replacement works because the old turf and the root layer under it leave the property together, and fresh sod goes onto rebuilt soil.

Two honest caveats. If the lawn is otherwise healthy and the weeds are patchy, you want a Calgary lawn-care company, not us — we don't spray and we don't do weed control. And if it's coming under a fence from a neighbour's yard, it can find its way back in; we'll tell you that before you spend the money rather than after.

Can you lay sod where a tree was removed?

Yes, but not straight over what the tree company left. A removal usually leaves a hole backfilled with grindings and loose material that keeps settling for a season or more — sod laid on top of it sinks into a dish, which is one of the more common redo calls we get in Calgary.

Done properly, that material comes out, real screened topsoil goes back in and gets compacted in lifts — thin layers, each one compacted before the next — and the area is graded flush with the lawn around it before any sod is laid. If the stump is still in the ground, have it ground out first — we don't grind or remove stumps — and we take it from there: the hole cleaned out, rebuilt with real soil, and graded flush before the sod goes down.

Am I allowed to water new sod under Calgary's watering restrictions?

Yes, under the regular schedule — in Calgary, new sod is exempt from the 3-day watering schedule for its first 21 days, so you water it as often as it needs while it establishes. Declared outdoor water restrictions are a different matter: a Stage 3 restriction limits that watering and Stage 4 stops it. Will the Bobcat damage my lawn or driveway during a sod replacement?

Our machine is a Bobcat MT100 compact track loader — it fits through a standard 3 ft (36 in) gate and its tracks are gentle on driveways and existing lawn. It's a track machine light enough not to rut a finished lawn, which is why we can do driveway-to-backyard work most mini-excavators can't reach. On a replacement the turf in the work area is coming out anyway; if your access is tight, whether the MT100 fits your gate is answered above.

The old sod and soil go straight into our own dump trailer rather than sitting in a pile on your driveway, and a full site clean-up is part of the job before we leave.
