Rock landscaping is a bed excavated to depth rather than rock piled on the lawn — usually 5–8 cm of rock over a compacted, graded base, commercial non-woven filter fabric, and steel or heavy-gauge aluminum edging staked deep. Most rock beds fail the same way: weeds come up through cheap fabric, the rock migrates into the lawn, and the edging heaves. We build them to last — the fabric and the edge are where we don't cut corners.

How we build a rock bed that lasts

1. Shape the bed and set the depth — usually 5–8 cm of rock, so we excavate for it rather than piling rock on the lawn.
2. Compact the base and grade it to drain.
3. Lay commercial non-woven filter fabric — overlapped and pinned.
4. Install steel or heavy-gauge aluminum edging, staked deep, so the rock and the lawn stay separate.
5. Place the rock, rake it even, and clean up.

Stepping-stone paths and stone borders

Rock beds and Calgary's freeze-thaw cycle

Calgary's chinooks are hard on a rock bed. A freeze-thaw cycle that runs dozens of times a winter — instead of the handful most cities see — heaves shallow edging out of the ground and works loose fabric to the surface within a season or two.

It's the single biggest reason a bed that looked fine in October is a mess by April.

That's why we stake edging below the frost-affected zone rather than just deep enough to stand up, and why the fabric gets pinned and overlapped instead of stapled at the corners. Boulders get set on a compacted footing, not just dropped on grade, so a spring heave doesn't tip them. None of this shows once the rock is down — it's the difference you feel in year three, not year one.

An Elgin front bed we rebuilt is exactly that failure caught late: the old concrete boxing the bed in had already cracked and heaved once, so it came out rather than being built over.

How much does rock landscaping cost in Calgary?

A finished decorative rock bed in Calgary or Chestermere typically runs $12–$25 per square foot installed. Rock landscaping is quoted by the area and the rock you choose — that per-square-foot figure covers the fabric, the edging and the labour, not just the stone.

Rock landscaping: common questions

Rock or mulch for my landscape beds?

Rock lasts decades and needs almost no upkeep — an occasional thin top-up refreshes colour and depth; mulch is cheaper up front, softer on plants, and needs refreshing every few years. The rock vs. mulch comparison covers both in full.

How deep should landscape rock be?

About 5–8 cm for coverage without seeing fabric. Deeper for pathways or high-traffic areas. The rock depth and coverage guide has the numbers.

Will weeds come through landscape rock?

Almost nothing comes through commercial fabric. Windblown seed can germinate in the rock over years — a quick spray once a season handles it. Cheap fabric is a different story.

Can a dry creek bed actually move water?

Yes, if it's graded and sized for the flow — we build them on the same excavated, sloped base as a real swale, just finished in river rock instead of turf. A decorative-only creek bed that isn't graded won't do anything in a downpour.

Do I need a permit for a rock bed in Calgary?

Generally no for a bed on your own property. Front-yard conversions in some newer Calgary communities have architectural guidelines on how much of the yard can be hardscaped — we'll flag it if yours does before we quote.

Does landscape rock edging heave out over winter?

Not if it's set deep enough. Calgary's chinook freeze-thaw is exactly the failure we build against — steel and aluminum edging staked below the frost-affected zone, not just deep enough to stand up on installation day.
