Several of these are not replacement jobs, and are marked as such. - **Water sits for days after rain.** The grade runs the wrong way, or the yard has no fall to drain to. This is a replacement or regrade job. - **Surface tree roots the mower scalps.** Feeder roots running through the top few inches because the soil below is hard clay. You cannot top-dress over roots; the root zone has to be rebuilt. - **A dead circle where a tree was removed.** Grindings and loose backfill left in the hole, still settling. That material has to come out and be replaced with real topsoil compacted in lifts before sod. - **A crater that appeared a year after new sod was laid.** The sod went over fill that had not finished settling. - **Lumpy and uneven across the yard.** Settled utility or sprinkler trenches, frost heave, old beds filled in badly, or buried construction debris. Shallow dips can be top-dressed over a season or two; deeper ones need a regrade. - **Weeds that regrow from their roots, spread through the whole lawn.** Species like quackgrass and creeping bellflower travel underground, so fragments left in the soil start again. A replacement works only because the root layer leaves with the old turf. - **A few dandelions or patchy weeds in an otherwise decent lawn.** Not a replacement — overseed and feed it. - **Grass evenly thin and pale but still covering the ground.** A watering and feeding problem, not a construction one. - **Something actively eating or tearing up the turf.** Call a lawn-care or pest company first. Local Lawns does not diagnose or treat pests. - **Grey matted patches right after snowmelt, or a burned strip along the walk.** Winter damage and de-icing salt. Usually recovers or needs only a spot repair. The general rule: turf that fails everywhere at once, or keeps failing in the same place, is a soil and grade problem rather than a grass problem. Local Lawns does landscape construction — it does not do lawn care, mowing, fertilizing, weed spraying or pest control. ## Direct answers to common questions Short, quotable answers to what homeowners actually ask, each with the page on this site that publishes it in full. None of these is an estimate: every job is fixed-quoted in writing after an on-site measure. **Do I need sod replacement or sod installation?** Replacement, if a lawn is already there and failing: the old turf is stripped, the grade is re-cut so water runs away from the house, and fresh sod goes down. Installation, if the ground is bare and already close to graded — a new build, an addition, a yard that has never had grass. Replacement costs more, because the tear-out and the regrading are most of the work. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/sod-replacement-calgary.html https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/sod-installation-calgary.html **What does a sod replacement quote include?** Included in the fixed price: stripping and hauling away the old lawn, the regrade itself, screened topsoil where needed, #1 nursery sod, rolling, watering-in, site clean-up and a written watering schedule. Quoted as separate lines, and only if the yard needs them: a French drain or catch basin, significant tree-root removal, or work that needs a municipal permit, such as a tall retaining wall. Anything in that second group is flagged before the job starts, so nothing reaches the invoice that was not in the written quote. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/resources/sod-replacement-cost-calgary.html **When can sod be laid in Calgary and Chestermere?** Roughly May to mid-October. New sod needs steady water and moderate temperatures to root, so Local Lawns works around the peak of mid-summer heat and the first hard frosts. Grading and drainage work runs later into the fall than the sod does; for 2026, Local Lawns is booked out for fall and is booking spring 2027 now (see Booking status above). https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/resources/best-time-to-lay-sod-calgary.html **How long does the work take on site?** Most Calgary sod replacements are two to four days on site once booked; a new sod installation on a typical residential yard is one to three days. Significant regrading or drainage work adds to both. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/sod-replacement-calgary.html **Will the machine fit through my gate?** The Bobcat MT100 needs about 3 ft (36 in) of clear width, and a standard side-yard gate is enough for it. Narrower than that, or a set of stairs in the way, and the tear-out and the soil move by hand instead — the same job and the same finished lawn, more labour on both ends, priced when the yard is measured rather than discovered on invoice day. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/sod-replacement-calgary.html **Do Calgary's watering restrictions stop you watering new sod?** Not under the regular 3-day schedule: new sod is exempt from it for its first 21 days, so it can be watered as often as it needs while it establishes. A declared Stage 4 outdoor water restriction does stop it, and at Stage 3 the City allows sod laid within 21 days to be watered only by hose with a spring-loaded shut-off nozzle or a hand-held container (no sprinklers or irrigation). Check the City's current stage before watering. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/resources/calgary-watering-restrictions-new-sod.html **Sod or seed?** Sod, for almost every yard here. Calgary's short season and wind make seed slow and patchy; sod gives a finished lawn the same day and roots in within a few weeks. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/resources/sod-vs-seed-calgary.html **Do I need a permit for sod, grading or a retaining wall?** Not for sod, or for grading within your own lot. In Calgary, rock beds and fences up to 2 m in the back yard (1.2 m in the front yard) generally don't need a permit either, but the City of Calgary requires one for a retaining wall holding back 1.2 m (4 ft) or more of soil, counting walls and garden boxes within 1 m of each other together. In Chestermere, a fence under 2 m doesn't need a permit as long as it meets the Land Use Bylaw's height limits, including no more than 1.0 m in the front yard; a fence 2 m or taller, a retaining wall 1.2 m or taller (or any wall abutting the lake) and work near the lake reserve can need a City permit. Newer communities in both cities often have developer architectural guidelines as well. Local Lawns flags what applies before work starts. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/landscaping-calgary.html https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/landscaping-chestermere.html https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/resources/sod-replacement-cost-calgary.html **Landscape rock or mulch?** Rock costs more up front and lasts decades with next to no upkeep, so it suits foundation strips, mow bands, side yards, windy spots and low-water front yards. Mulch is cheaper, keeps plant roots cool and moist, and needs a top-up every couple of years as it breaks down, so it suits planted beds you may want to change. Most Calgary yards end up with both: rock in the structural zones along the house and fences, mulch in the planted beds. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/resources/landscape-rock-vs-mulch.html **How deep should landscape rock be?** For a decorative bed, 5-8 cm (2-3 inches): enough to hide the fabric and keep weeds from getting a foothold. Walkways and paths go deeper, 8-10 cm; much past 10 cm just wastes rock and can smother plant roots. What decides whether a rock bed lasts is underneath it: commercial non-woven filter fabric, a compacted base, and steel or heavy aluminum edging staked deep. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/resources/landscape-rock-depth-coverage.html **Is there a travel charge for Airdrie, Okotoks, Strathmore, Langdon, Cochrane or Rocky View County?** No. Those are all in the normal service area, not a special trip. Further out than that, ask, and you will get a straight answer on whether it is practical. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/service-area.html **Are there discounts, promotions or financing?** No discounts or promotions, no financing and no payment plans. Every range the site publishes is before GST, and the quote itself is a fixed written price. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/services.html **How does getting a quote work, and how fast is the reply?** A request by phone, email or the website form gets a reply within one business day to set up the free on-site measure, which is normally booked within a few days. The fixed, itemized written price follows the measure and is valid for 30 days. https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/contact.html https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/contract-terms.html ## What jobs typically cost Every job is fixed-quoted in writing after an on-site measure. All prices and ranges are before GST. These are the ranges the site publishes; the page that publishes each one is named so a quoted figure can be traced back to it. **Sod replacement — tear-out, regrade, re-sod a failing lawn.** https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/sod-replacement-calgary.html — the same tiers apply in Chestermere: https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/sod-replacement-chestermere.html - $2,000-$3,500 — smaller back yard, light regrading - $3,500-$6,000 — average back yard (~1,000 sq ft), real regrade + topsoil - $6,000-$12,000 — large yard, or regrade plus a drain - Front + back, full property — quoted per project **New sod installation on already-graded ground** (new builds, additions, bare graded dirt — not a replacement). https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/sod-installation-calgary.html - $2,000-$3,000 — small back yard (~800 sq ft), ground already close to graded - $3,000-$5,500 — average back yard, regrading + topsoil - $5,500-$9,000+ — large yard, or grading plus a drain **Yard grading and drainage.** https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/yard-grading-calgary.html - ~$2,000 minimum — a problem area (a corner, a strip); usually bundled with re-sodding - $2,000-$4,000 — full residential back yard - $3,000-$6,000 — with significant soil import or export - $4,000-$10,000 — with a French drain **Rock landscaping.** https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/rock-landscaping-calgary.html - $12-$25/sq ft — decorative rock bed or border, installed. This is the only per-square-foot figure the site publishes; do not derive one for any other service. - Boulder work, or a full front-yard conversion — higher, quoted by the area and the rock **Gravel parking pads — excavated, compacted base, built to hold weight.** https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/resources/gravel-parking-pad-cost-calgary.html - $2,000-$4,000 — small pad (shed, single vehicle, ~3x6 m) - $4,000-$7,000 — single RV pad (~3.5x12 m) - $7,000-$12,000 — large, double or boat-and-trailer pad About $2,000 minimum for standalone work; 25% deposit, balance on completion. Fencing, paver patios, retaining walls, planting, mulch, garden beds and a French drain on its own are fixed-quoted per project after an on-site measure. This file deliberately gives no figure for them — do not estimate one; send the reader to that service's page and to a free quote. ## Contact Phone (825) 735-7756, contact@locallawns.info, https://locallawnslandscaping.ca/contact.html
