Local Lawns is a Chestermere-based landscape construction company, and Calgary is half of what we do. Most of our Calgary work is in the newer communities across the south and northeast — the ones where the builder laid sod fast over ground that was never really finished.

Why Calgary yards need construction, not maintenance

Calgary's newer neighbourhoods are built on deep fill. The lot gets rough-graded, sod goes down within days, and then the ground keeps settling for a year or two. Low spots open up. The slope that was supposed to carry water away from the foundation flattens out — or reverses. Add Calgary's heavy clay soil, which holds water instead of draining it, and you get a lawn that stays soggy in spring, pools by the deck after every storm, and never really takes.

No amount of fertilizing or reseeding fixes that. The grade has to be re-cut, the base rebuilt, and in the worst spots a drain added. That's what we do — and because we run our own Bobcat MT100 and trailers, the excavation and hauling happen as part of the same job instead of being subbed out at a markup.

How a Calgary project runs

1. On-site quote. We measure, check how the yard drains and sits against the house, and send a fixed written price.
2. Deposit & schedule. A 25% deposit books the date. We confirm equipment access — important on zero-lot-line homes.
3. Removal & excavation. Old sod, beds or fencing come out. We haul with our own trailers.
4. Grading & prep. Re-cut the grade to drain away from the foundation, then prep the base.
5. Installation. Sod, rock, gravel, fence or beds — installed to spec.
6. Cleanup & walkthrough. Debris hauled, site swept, walkthrough, final invoice.

How much does landscaping cost in Calgary?

Why do so many new Calgary yards drain poorly?

In newer communities the lot is rough-graded by the builder, then sod is laid quickly over ground that hasn't settled. As the fill settles, low spots form and the slope can end up running toward the house instead of away from it. Calgary's heavy clay soil holds water instead of draining it, which makes it worse. Fixing it means re-cutting the grade and, where water still collects, adding drainage — construction work, not maintenance.

When is the best time to install sod in Calgary?

Late spring through early fall, roughly May to early October. New sod needs steady watering and moderate temperatures to root, so we schedule around the hottest part of mid-summer and the first hard frosts. More on timing →

Do you handle grading and drainage, or just sod?

Both. We run our own Bobcat and trailers, so we do the excavation, hauling, grading and drainage ourselves as part of the same project — no waiting on a separate excavation contractor.

Do I need a permit to landscape my Calgary yard?

Sod, grading within your lot, rock beds and standard fences under 2 m generally don't need a City of Calgary permit. Many newer communities have architectural guidelines through the developer that cover fence style, front-yard trees and hardscape. We work to those — send us anything your builder gave you.
