When is the best time to lay sod in Calgary?

Sod can go down any time the ground isn't frozen, but “can” and “should” are different. The window that gives you a lawn that actually establishes is narrower.

The ideal windows

Late spring — mid-May to late June

The best time. The ground has warmed, frost risk is gone, and there's usually enough natural moisture that your watering has help. Roots establish fast before summer heat. This is also the busiest time — book it months ahead.

Early fall — late August to late September

Nearly as good. Cooler days, cooler nights, morning dew, and soil that's still warm from summer. The sod roots through fall and comes back strong in spring. Our schedule opens up a bit here.

The times to avoid

Peak summer — July to mid-August

Doable, but the sod is under stress from day one. Fresh sod in 28 °C sun needs watering twice a day, and any gap shows up as brown seams. If you must, we can do it — just commit to the water. Worth knowing before you book a summer install: new sod is exempt from Calgary's watering schedule for its first 21 days, so the restrictions aren't a reason to wait.

Late October onward

Once nights are consistently below freezing, the sod can't root before winter. It might survive dormant and knit in spring, or it might not. We stop laying sod when the ground starts to freeze.

What about spring frost?

A light frost won't hurt sod that's watered. We watch the forecast and hold off if a hard freeze is coming within a day or two of a scheduled install.

Booking the spring rush

If you want your lawn done in May or June, get on our schedule over the winter. Spring fills up by March most years. Fall installs can often be booked with a few weeks' notice.

Can sod be laid in the rain?

Light rain is fine and actually helps. We don't work a yard that's turned to mud — it wrecks the grade.

How late in fall can you go?

Usually to the first week of October, weather depending. After that the risk isn't worth your money.

Does new fall sod need winter protection?

No — just keep watering until the ground freezes, then leave it. Don't walk on frosted sod.
