Sod vs. seed in Calgary
For almost every Calgary yard, sod. The short season, the wind and the clay make seed a long, frustrating gamble. Here's the honest comparison.

Head to head
| Sod | |
|---|---|
| Cost to install | higher |
| Usable lawn | same day (2–3 wk to root) |
| Full establishment | one season |
| Weed pressure while establishing | very low |
| Erosion on a slope | held immediately |
| Watering commitment | 3 weeks intensive |
| Best window | May–Oct |
Seed costs less to buy, but takes a full season (often two) to look like a lawn, competes with weeds the whole time, washes off any slope, and needs consistent moisture for weeks while it germinates — hard to guarantee in a Calgary summer. Most people who seed a whole yard end up sodding it anyway.
When seed still makes sense
- Overseeding a lawn that's basically fine and just thin
- A large acreage area where sod cost is prohibitive and you can wait
- A naturalized / low-mow fescue area you're not treating as a lawn
What we'd tell a neighbour
If it's your main yard and you want it to look good this year, sod it — once, done right, on a proper grade. If it's a back-forty area and you're patient, seed is fine. We do sod installs and replacements; we'll tell you straight if seed is the smarter call for your situation.
FAQ
Can you seed instead of sod?
We focus on sod because that's what almost every Calgary yard needs. For overseeding or naturalized areas we can point you the right direction.
Is there a hybrid approach?
Sometimes — sod the visible, sloped and high-traffic areas, seed a flat out-of-the-way section. We'll lay it out in the quote.
Does seed ever end up cheaper overall?
Rarely, once you count it honestly. Add the seed, starter fertilizer, weeks of extra watering, the erosion control on any slope, and the almost-universal patch-and-reseed the following spring, and the total often lands close to what sod would have cost — just spread over a full season of a half-finished yard.
