How much does sod installation cost in Calgary?

There's no honest per-square-foot number that covers every yard, because the sod itself is the cheap part. What you're paying for is the prep — and that varies enormously.

The five things that move the price

1. Size

Obvious, but worth stating: sod, soil and labour all scale with area. A 400 sq ft courtyard and a 1,500 sq ft back yard are different jobs.

2. Tear-out

If we're replacing a failing lawn, the old turf and a layer of soil have to come off and get hauled away. That's machine time plus disposal — often 20–30% of a replacement job. New construction with bare dirt skips this. This is the main reason lawn replacement costs more than a fresh sod install.

3. Regrading

If your yard drains toward the house or holds water, the grade has to be re-cut before sod. A light regrade is a few hours with the Bobcat; correcting a badly settled yard, or one where soil has to be moved a long way, is a day or more. See yard grading.

4. Topsoil

Calgary's new-build lots are often finished with thin, rocky construction fill. Sod won't root in that, so we truck in screened topsoil — priced by the yard delivered, plus the labour to place and level it.

5. Access

A Bobcat that can drive straight into the back yard through a wide gate is fast. A zero-lot-line house where everything — soil in, spoil out — goes through a 90 cm gate by wheelbarrow costs noticeably more in labour.

A worked example

A new-build back yard, roughly 800 sq ft, ground already close to graded, one wide gate for equipment access: that's the top row above — call it $1,800–$2,400 once we've measured. The same size yard on rough construction fill that needs real topsoil and a proper regrade first moves into the $3,000–$5,500 row. Add a French drain because part of the lot won't drain on its own, and it climbs past that — two real jobs stacked, not one number padded to look thorough.

Is sod cheaper than seed?

Up front, seed is cheaper. But seeding a lawn in Calgary means months of watering, weeding and thin patches. Factor in the failed first attempt most people have, and sod usually wins on total cost. Full comparison →

Can I do the tear-out myself to save money?

You can, and some people do. Just be realistic — removing 1,500 sq ft of sod and soil by hand is a brutal weekend, and if the grade still needs machine work we're bringing the Bobcat anyway.

Do new-build lots cost less to sod than older yards?

Often, if the developer's rough grade is close to right — less regrading means a lower number. But new-build fill is frequently thin and rocky, which can add topsoil cost the other way. We won't know which applies to your lot until we measure.

Is there a minimum job size?

Around $2,000 — below that, the cost of getting a crew and machine on site outweighs the size of the job. We'll tell you honestly if your job is under that floor.
