How much does sod installation cost in Calgary?

There's no honest per-square-foot number that covers every yard, because the sod itself is the cheap part. What you're paying for is the prep — and that varies enormously.

The ballpark

The five things that move the price

1. Size

Obvious, but worth stating: sod, soil and labour all scale with area. A 400 sq ft courtyard and a 1,500 sq ft back yard are different jobs.

2. Tear-out

If we're replacing a failing lawn, the old turf and a layer of soil have to come off and get hauled away. That's machine time plus hauling — often 25–35% of a replacement job. New construction with bare dirt skips this. This is the main reason lawn replacement costs more than a fresh sod install.

3. Regrading

If your yard drains toward the house or holds water, the grade has to be re-cut before sod. A light regrade is a few hours with the Bobcat; correcting a badly settled yard, or one where soil has to be moved a long way, is a day or more. See yard grading.

4. Topsoil

Calgary's new-build lots are often finished with thin, rocky construction fill. Sod won't root in that, so we truck in screened topsoil — priced by the yard delivered, plus the labour to place and level it.

5. Access

A Bobcat that can drive straight into the back yard through a standard side gate is fast. A zero-lot-line house where everything — soil in, spoil out — goes through a gate too narrow for the machine, by wheelbarrow, costs noticeably more in labour.

A worked example: an 800 sq ft new-build back yard

A new-build back yard, roughly 800 sq ft, ground already close to graded, one wide gate for equipment access: that's the top row above — call it $2,000–$2,400 once we've measured.

The same size yard on rough construction fill that needs real topsoil and a proper regrade first moves into the $3,000–$5,500 row. Add a French drain because part of the lot won't drain on its own, and it climbs past that — two real jobs stacked, not one number padded to look thorough.

For 2026 we’re booked out for fall — new work is booked for spring 2027: measured and quoted this fall, with the quoted price held for a spring install and no deposit until spring (fence excepted). The sod season reopens in May.

Common questions about sod installation cost in Calgary

Is sod cheaper than seed?

Up front, seed is cheaper. But seeding a lawn in Calgary means months of watering, weeding and thin patches. Factor in the failed first attempt most people have, and sod usually wins on total cost. The sod vs. seed comparison covers both in full.

How much sod do I need for my yard?

You can work out the square footage yourself in three steps, before anyone comes out. One: break the yard into rectangles — the main lawn, the strip down the side, the piece past the shed. Two: measure each rectangle's length and width in feet and multiply them together. Three: add those areas up. That total is the rough square footage every sod quote starts from, and it's the number worth having in front of you when you call.

Round up rather than down, and leave yourself a margin on top of the total. Sod arrives in pieces, so every curved bed, tree ring and angled fence line means cuts, and the offcuts don't all fit somewhere else. For scale: a small Calgary back yard is around 800 sq ft, and a fairly typical one is about 40 × 25 ft — 1,000 sq ft.

Can I do the sod tear-out myself to save money?

You can, and some people do. Just be realistic — removing 1,500 sq ft of sod and soil by hand is a brutal weekend, and if the grade still needs machine work we're bringing the Bobcat anyway.

Why do new-build lots sometimes cost less to sod?

When the developer's rough grade is close to right, there's less regrading, which means a lower number. But new-build fill is frequently thin and rocky, which can add topsoil cost the other way. We won't know which applies to your lot until we measure.

What's the minimum job Local Lawns takes on?

Around $2,000 for standalone work — below that, the cost of getting a crew and machine on site outweighs the size of the job. We'll tell you honestly if your job is under that floor.
