Local Lawns started in Chestermere and grew out of one thing: too many new yards that were sodded fast and never drained right. Fixing that properly is construction work — regrading, drainage, rebuilding the base — not something a maintenance company does.

What we do, and what we don't

We install and rebuild yards: sod, grading and drainage, rock and mulch, fencing, and beds and planting. We do not mow, fertilize or provide weekly maintenance. That focus is deliberate — it's why the grading and drainage side of our work is actually good.

Owner

Harman Gill owns and runs Local Lawns and is on site for the work — he's the one who walks your yard, writes the quote, and runs the crew that builds it. Local Lawns started because too many Calgary-area yards were being sodded on top of a grade that was never fixed, so the lawn failed again within a season or two. Building it right the first time — grade, base, drainage, then the finish — is the whole reason this business exists rather than another mow-and-blow outfit. Reach him directly at (825) 735‑7756 or contact@locallawns.info.

We own our equipment

Local Lawns runs its own Bobcat MT100 track loader, a dump trailer and an enclosed equipment trailer. Most landscapers book the work and then sub out the parts that need machines — every hand-off is a delay and a markup. We do the removal, excavation, hauling, grading and installation ourselves, one crew, one schedule.

Owning the machine changes more than the price. It means we're not waiting on a rental yard's availability or someone else's operator to fit us into their week, so a job that starts on Monday can usually finish on Monday's timeline, not whenever every sub-trade lines up. It also means the same person who dug the site yesterday is the one setting sod on it today — nothing gets lost translating the plan from one crew to another.

How a project actually goes

  1. On-site measure. We walk the yard, check the grade, and talk through what's actually wrong before quoting a fix for it.
  2. Fixed written quote. One price, itemized, based on what we saw on your property — not a phone estimate.
  3. 25% deposit books your date in the schedule.
  4. Removal, excavation and grading first. This is the part that determines whether the finished work lasts, so it happens before anything visible goes in.
  5. Installation — sod, rock, gravel, fencing or beds — built on the base we just prepared, by the same crew.
  6. Walkthrough and final invoice once the site is cleaned up and you've had a chance to look at it with us.

Why owner-run matters

There's no gap between the person who quotes the job and the person who's accountable for it holding up. If something about the site changes once we're digging — a drainage issue we didn't see from the surface, ground that's worse than it looked — that decision gets made on site, by the owner, not relayed through an office. And because Harman is the one who has to come back and fix it if it's wrong, the incentive is to build it right the first time, not to move to the next job fast.

Professional from quote to invoice

You get a fixed written quote after an on-site measure. A 25% deposit books the date. We schedule properly, show up when we say, and hand you a final invoice on completion. WCB coverage and liability insurance are in place on every job — see our questions to ask before hiring any landscaper if you're comparing quotes.

Do you do lawn maintenance or mowing?

No. Local Lawns is a construction company — sod, grading, drainage, rock, fencing and beds. We don't mow, fertilize, or offer weekly maintenance, and we won't quote it.
