Before & after

Thin lawn to new sod in Varsity

Before
Varsity front yard before the work: a thin, patchy lawn along the walk, with fallen leaves and planted beds on both sides
After
The same front yard that afternoon: new sod along the walk, fitted to the beds
Varsity · sod replacement · the thin old lawn that morning, new sod by late afternoon
Stripped
Varsity front yard with the old lawn stripped out and the ground graded, our Bobcat MT100 at the edge of the frame
After
The same front yard finished in new sod, the house and porch behind
Varsity · sod replacement · stripped and graded at midday, sod down by late afternoon

This Varsity front lawn had thinned out around the walk and between the planted beds, so the whole lawn came out rather than being patched.

Our crew stripped the old sod with our Bobcat MT100 and hauled it away, made grading adjustments, levelled in fresh topsoil where it was needed and laid new sod, fitted around the walk and the beds and rolled. Then no-dig edging went in to keep a clean line between the lawn and the planting.

  3. Topsoil. Installed and levelled fresh topsoil where the ground needed it.
  4. Sod. Laid new sod, fitted and cut around the walk and the beds.
  5. Roll. Rolled the new lawn for good contact with the soil, then cleaned up the work area.

Result: a new Varsity front lawn with clean edges

A new front lawn on adjusted ground, from the walk to the beds, with an edge that keeps the grass out of the planting. The old lawn was out by late morning and the new one was down by late afternoon. It is the same strip-and-rebuild method behind every sod replacement we do.

A tired front lawn replaced — Varsity, Calgary: common questions

What does no-dig lawn edging do?

It keeps a clean line between the lawn and the beds, so grass doesn't creep into the planting and the edge stays easy to trim around. No-dig edging is staked in at the surface with a little ground preparation, so it goes in without trenching through roots in an established bed.
