Before the work, the downspouts at the back corner of this house emptied through a black corrugated extension lying across the lawn. A hose like that gets stepped on, crushed and moved, and its ridged walls catch grit.

We replaced it with SDR 35, rigid smooth-walled PVC drain pipe, and buried it. Then we rebuilt the yard on top: a French drain along the garage, a paver path with rock, two paver tire strips for parking, and a new lawn after the old shed came out.

How we buried the downspouts and rebuilt the yard

Clear. Took out the old shed, a fence section and the worn lawn, and hauled it all away.
Trench. Dug the downspout lines and the French drain trench with our Bobcat MT100.
Lay SDR 35. Ran the downspouts in rigid SDR 35 PVC, joining two lines at a wye, on a steady fall so the water keeps moving.
French drain. About 26 feet along the garage: non-woven geotextile, drainage rock and perforated pipe, sloped to its discharge point.
Backfill & grade. Backfilled the trenches and graded the yard so water moves away from the house.
Hardscape. Built the paver path, set rock beside the garage and deck, and set two paver tire strips on a compacted aggregate base with bedding.
Sod. Spread topsoil and laid sod between the tire strips and across the yard, finished flush around the downspout connections.

Result: roof water carried away underground

Both downspouts at the back corner now drop straight into buried pipe at the wall, with the sod finished flush around them. There's no hose on the lawn to trip over or crush, and the roof water travels underground in pipe that holds its slope. The tire strips, path and new lawn finish the yard on top, built the same strip-and-rebuild way we replace a failing lawn.

What is SDR 35 pipe, and why use it for downspouts?

SDR 35 is rigid PVC sewer and drain pipe; the number is the ratio of the pipe's outside diameter to its wall thickness. It is smooth inside, so water and grit keep moving, and stiff, so a buried line holds the slope it was laid at. A corrugated flex hose has ridged walls that catch grit and can sag or crush in the ground. For a line under a lawn, rigid pipe is the one we'd want there in ten years.

Do downspout extensions need a French drain too?

Not always. A downspout extension carries roof water away; a French drain collects water that sits in the ground or runs across the surface. This yard needed both: the downspouts at the back corner and the drain along the garage. The drainage page explains how we tell which a yard needs.
