How much does a gravel parking pad cost in Calgary?

You're not paying for gravel. You're paying for the excavation, the base, and the compaction that lets it carry a loaded trailer.

What drives the number

Excavation depth

An RV pad needs 25–35 cm of excavation for a proper base. A garden-shed pad needs half that. Deeper dig = more spoil to haul.

Disposal

All that excavated clay has to go somewhere — trailer loads to the landfill, with tipping fees. On a big pad this is a real line item.

Base material

Road crush (base) plus a clean gravel top layer, placed in compacted lifts. Priced by the tonne delivered.

Access

Can the trucks and the Bobcat get to the pad location, or does material get barrowed around the house? Access is often the single biggest swing.

Edging and finish

Timber, steel or a soldier-course edge to keep the gravel contained. Optional but worth it.

The pads we get called to replace

Always the same story: no geotextile, no compaction, gravel straight on clay. It looks fine for a summer, then the base pumps up into the gravel, it holds water, and it ruts under the RV. Doing it right once is cheaper than doing it twice — get a fixed quote before you commit to a pad.

Do I need a permit for a gravel pad in Calgary?

A pad on your own property generally doesn't need a development permit, but front-yard parking and lane access have rules, and some communities restrict front hardscape. We'll flag what applies to your lot.

Can it double as a basketball / play area?

Gravel isn't ideal for that — you'd want a harder surface. But the base we build is exactly what a future concrete or paver pad needs, so it's not wasted.

How long does it take to build?

One to three days depending on size and haul volume.
