The front yard of this 10-unit complex in Killarney had grade that needed fixing near the building. We regraded the lawn so water runs away from the building, brought in topsoil where it was needed and laid new sod, with a 6-inch riser so the lift-station lid sits at the new grade.
An old paver circle sat in the lawn. Instead of hauling it away, we lifted its pavers and relaid them as a new path through the front garden, adding pavers where the path was extended. The job also took in a 4-layer pressure-treated timber retaining wall about 10 metres long and a raised flower bed.
Neighbourhood: Killarney, SW Calgary

The lawn around the building now drains the right way, on new sod, and the pavers that sat in a circle in the lawn make a path that curves from the gate through the garden. Regrading before the sod goes down is the same order we follow when we replace a failing lawn.
Sod follows the ground under it. If the lawn slopes toward the building, new sod only hides the problem: water still runs to the foundation. Fixing the slope first sends water away from the building, and the new lawn goes on the corrected grade. The yard grading page explains how we check it.
When they're in good shape, yes. Here the pavers from an old paver circle came up and went back down as the new path on a fresh base of fabric, compacted gravel and bedding sand. The path ended up longer than the circle had pavers for, so we supplied the extras.
When a yard is regraded, the ground can end up higher than the lid. A riser brings the lid up to the new grade so it stays visible and reachable, and the sod finishes flush around it instead of burying it.
