Grass won't grow well under a deck. We excavated the ground under this one, took the old material away, and graded it so water runs away from the house rather than toward the foundation.

Then contractor-grade landscape fabric went down, pressure-treated wood edging set the border, and about 3 inches of 40 mm limestone filled the space under the deck and around the stairs.

Result: a clean, drained rock floor under the deck

A clean, drained rock floor under the deck that won't turn to mud or weeds, edged neatly against the lawn. The area was dug out in the morning and the limestone was down by early afternoon. If the lawn beside a deck has failed too, that is a sod replacement job for the same crew.

Limestone under a deck — Montgomery, Calgary: common questions

Why put limestone under a deck?

The ground under a deck gets little sun or rain, so grass struggles and bare dirt turns to dust, mud and weeds. Graded, covered in fabric and filled with limestone, it stays clean, drains, and needs nothing from you. Grading it away from the house first keeps water off the foundation.
